9/26 Review

Granted this is a little late, but I had a tough week. But for some reason I didn't take many notes last class. As I come to think about it, I don't take many notes in class. That's strange to me becuase I LOVE taking notes. It keeps me organized and helps me to remember what we went over in class. Is there any way you can guide/indicate anything we should be writing down? Last class I think you said something about how you were the only one doing the talking. I hate that too becuase I feel like everyone loses focus if they're not participating. Now back to business...

The 2 programs you introduced to us are very new to me. I probably wouldn't have heard of them if it wasn't for class. How different Atomic Learning and United Streaming were, and this has all to do with the videos that were presented to us. Atomic Learning's informational video was boring and not at all engaging. After reading chapter 4, I took some of the concepts of the three software tools and entered that into the sight. The information it relayed was a little jumbled and at times hard to follow. The concept of the site is great, but after all the problems we had trying to register, it seems to have some kinks to iron out. United Streaming on the other hand was so effective to me because of the example presented to us, but also the way the site is organized. Finding videos is easy as can be because everything is categorized by grade or subject matter. I did a search on literature and picked a video concerning Edgar Allen Poe. It gave a description of the video and the appropriate viewing age. It was right on and I would definitely use these kinds of videos in my class. The subject matter was mature, but it was presented in a fun way in which students would be interested.

Chapter 4 introduced basic software tools for the classroom. Word processing seems to be the simplest form, but I was shocked that it was fine to introduce 4 or 5 year olds to it. I guess times are changing and this will become the norm. I was interested in this section because as a class, I know we always discuss how repetitive word processing was when we were younger. It is a good tool at a younger age, but it comes harder as you get older. Spreadsheets were a much harder concept to learn, but I find very useful in any subject. It definitely keeps students organized and on task.

Yes, your Blog is a little late. I checked until midnight last night without any posting...As far as notes in class, this particular course is quite different from your other classes because of the content. It is more of a "learn how and why approach" and then applying what you learned. If you would like to discuss the class with me personally, I would be more than happy to meet with you individually. I read the Blogs very thoroughly each week from every student. However, it seems that ALL the other students have been interpreting the class with a different viewpoint than yours. They seem to be really impressed. Their Blogs have included most of my discussion and find it very interesting that they are finding out facts that they thought never existed before...

I'm glad you liked United Streaming. However, give Atomic Learning a chance. Part of the errors were due to students quickly putting in their codes incorrectly. Did you get my email?

By the way, Chapter 4 was not due this week. Check your syllabus on the course schedule. You should have included a review of Chapter 3 with the online text module.

In conclusion, start taking notes on the topics being discussed in class with a vision of how you will use some of the material someday in your own class. Also, be careful to watch the course schedule. There are many projects going on in the class with various deadlines. By the end of the class course, you will gain a better perspective on the use of technology in the classroom. However, be a little more "open-minded." I promise that the information being presented in this classroom will be very rewarding for your future classroom.
